Transnational Social Organizations play an increasingly vital role in Global affairs. They challenge the notion of the primacy nation state as most of them are able to be involved in and execute international agendas in a variety of countries in different parts of the world, some of them with budgets larger than individual countries. This issue seeks to introduce 9 Muslim NGO’s and their stated mission to Humanity.
Islamic Relief Organization
Founded by the Muslim World League in 1978 the Islamic Relief Organization is a charity based in Saudi Arabia. It sponsors projects in Social Welfare, Engineering, Society Development and Seasonal Projects Emergency relief, health care, education and Quranic studies.
It operates all over the world but mainly in the Middle East and Asia but also in African and European countries.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the liaison between activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. It is based in Geneva has operations in every nation on earth. They focus mainly on provided emergency medical supplies and upholding the principles of International Humanitarian Law.
Muslim Aid is a UK based charity founded in 1989 that provides relief and development programs in over 70 countries all over the world. Muslim Aid has a stated commitment to supporting long-term development projects and this constitutes 50% of it funding.
Deniz Feneri Association
This is the largest NGO in Turkey. It provides emergency and long-term aid all over the world and operates an extensive food and clothes bank system. It also provides shelter and health services to families in need as well as scholarship and aid for school children. It also supports academic research on poverty-related issues.
Qatar Charitable Society
Founded in 1992 it is now known as the Qatar Society and is currently the largest NGO in Qatar. This organization sponsors projects ranging from disaster relief to income generation initiatives, to education and health care. It operates in more than 25 countries and has offices in Pakistan, Indonesia, and the UK.
International Islamic Charitable Organization
Established in Kuwait in 1986 the ICO was “founded to meet the increasingly urgent needs of the poor especially in Muslim countries. However, The ICO works all over the world and provides relief services to the needy in the areas of education, disaster relief, epidemics medical, and others regardless of race nationality and creed.
Founded in UK by Islamic Scholar Syeed Lakhte Hassanain its mission statement reads “To be at the forefront in delivering relief from poverty, sickness and the provision of education worldwide by providing an ethical service for the collection & Distribution of funds in an effective, efficient, transparent and wholly accountable manner. Muslim Hands operates in over 40 countries.
Interpal is UK based charity founded in 1994. It is an apolitical charity that focuses on the provision of relief and development aid to Palestinians It works in Gaza and the West Bank and in Palestinian camps in Jordan and Lebanon. Their intervention areas include emergency humanitarian aid, medical assistance, educational support and community development.
Human Concern International
Also known as HCI is Canadian NGO founded in 1980. They focus mainly on Afghan orphans are well known for their Hope village communities that house mainly orphans.
