Ever wondered what a door to hell would look like? Look no further, simply browse this post and you will see what the entrance to hell may look like.
What is hell? A place regarded in various religions as a spiritual realm of evil and suffering, often traditionally depicted as a place of perpetual fire where the wicked are punished after death.
Derweze (Persian: The Gate, also known as Darvaza) is a village in Turkmenistan of about 350 inhabitants, located in the middle of the Karakum Desert, about 260 km north from Ashgabat.
There rests a crater. But it’s not just any crater. It is a flaming big hole that won’t stop burning. It’s a Giant gas crater called The Door To Hell that was caused by drilling blunder and was expected to burn out after a few days in 1971 but it is still burning away for more than 43 years.
You really have to check it out to see what The Door To Hell on earth really looks like.
Starting the tour with a standard picture but don’t worry, as you scroll down, it will heat up.
Drilling blunder from some genius who thought it will burn away in few days created this Gate to Hell, the Crater of Fire.
Originally a level surface, the site was identified by Soviet scientists in 1971 as an area that was believed to house a substantial oil field. The drilling rig they setup to store the gas collapsed, which created a big crater that was believed to be releasing large quantities of methane gas.
The Geologists with high IQ were worried that the natural gas field would have adverse effects on neighboring towns.
In an effort to stop the spread of deadly methane gas, the Scientists with high IQ decided that why not just burn off the poisonous gases, which was suppose to take only few days.
It obviously didn’t work. More than four decades later, it is still burning. I wondered if those Scientists with high IQ got a good reference letter from Turkmenistan.
The diameter is about 230 feet, and its depth is just under 100 feet. No that’s not me in that red jacket standing so close to Hell on earth.
These two are the Scientists who originally started this mess… just kidding, they look too young to be more than 60 years old.
This area would have been cornered off if the gas was actually being stored but since they made the blunder and left, it turned into a tourist attraction for the locals. The door to hell crater is still ablaze – and every year hundreds of tourists flock to visit it, with their numbers increasing.
