Surely to Allah we belong and to Him shall we return. Death scares most of us because we don’t know much about it nor do we know much about life after death. We are certain we will die one day but few of us are willing to discuss the details of what happens thereafter. We are afraid of the unseen and unfamiliar future and so we are unprepared to delve into that realm.
In Islam, death ends this world and ushers in eternal life.
“Everyone is going to taste death, and We shall make a trial of you with evil and with good, and to Us you will be returned.” Quran (Surah Al-Anbiya:21 4 )
However, the return of every soul to the afterlife shall depend on its state of righteousness in this world . To the pious believers, it will be said as stated in the Quran (Surah Al-Fajr 89:27-30)
(It will be said to the pious): “O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction!.
“Come back to your Lord well- pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing (unto Him)!.
“Enter you then among My (honored) slaves,.
“And enter you My Paradise!”
In the signs of Allah we learn lessons to take care of our lives. We must remember death is inevitable, and everything except Allah Azawajal will someday perish. Signs of death can be seen all around us. At funerals we see people who were once walking among us being buried in their graves. In the fall we see the leaves turn from green to yellow and fall one at a time. In the winter trees become lifeless. In this way we are reminded that all things in this world will one day wither away and die.
Allah sends the Angel of Death (Malakal Ma’wt) also called ‘Izraeel’ to take the soul out of our bodies.
“Say: The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls: Then shall you be brought back to your Lord.” (Surah Al-Sajdah: 32:11)
As far as the removal of the soul from the body is concerned, the Angel of Death will extract it from good people with ease. For those who are bad, the removal of the soul is tough and difficult. The description for the removal of the soul from hypocrites and disbelievers is horrifying. Many angels participate in the task. They beat the face and back of the dying person while extracting the soul. This makes the individual’s death difficult.
“If you could see, when the angels take the souls of the unbelievers (at death), how they smite their faces and their backs, saying: taste the penalty of the blazing fire. Because of the deeds which your own hands sent forth: For God is never unjust to his servants”. (Surah Al-Anfal 8:50-51).
This life is a journey, death is not the end, we should be prepared for the eternal life. May Allah give us a good ending. May we die on the right path, the path of truth (Islam) that will lead us to Jannah.
