Happiness is a word literally used to describe certain ranges of positive feelings. We humans at times have feelings of joy, peace, contentment, pride and gratitude. Sometimes the feelings could be rare and sometimes it could be common depending on its state or source.
When Allah created us and put us on this earth, he didn’t promise us an eternal peaceful life, he didn’t promise us a life full of joy and excitement and neither did he promise us a perfect life. But however, he did give us and show us effective ways and means to lead happy lives either through his words (i.e. Quran) or through the words of his messenger ﷺ.
Having faith and doing righteous deeds are one of the top ways to keep away from a life of sadism. Allah has promised a blessed and happy life in this world and also the best reward in the hereafter for those who believe in Allah and His messengers. For these were the words of Allah in a verse in Sûrah An-Nahl:
“Whoever does good male or female and he is a believer, we will most certainly make him live a happy life, and we will most certainly give them their reward for the best of what they did”. (16:97)
Having faith means technically leaving all obstacles or unwanted situations in the hands of Allah, and being happy with any good that you have, however “little”. Thus being contented with every little thing in your life does not only give you a peace of mind and heart but also paves a way for your happiness.
The remembrance of Allah all the time is a sure way to attain happiness in life. Having and thinking about Allah always, be it in the depth of your heart or in your mind or through the actions of your body is the best way to brighten one’s heart with joy and tranquility. Allah Himself did say so in Sûrah Ar-Rad:
“Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured” (13:28)
Always focus on the things that matter the most in your life and try your very best to accomplish them through self-determination. Never approach the harmful practices that make you suffer depressing and disheartening feelings.
We should know that one’s life is duly affected by your way of thinking. If you tend to be someone who thinks positively all the time either towards your religious affairs or your worldly affairs, then you are more likely to live and lead a happy life.
Also, learn to rely and depend on Allah because unlike man, Allaah does not fail His promises. We should put all our trust and expectations on Allah with all our hearts while seeking guidance through Him alone. Doing this will help us recover from any emotional and physical afflictions and surely Allah will be sufficient for us. This is clarified in Sûrah At-Talaq:
“And whoever relies upon Allah- then He is sufficient for him” (65:3)
As said earlier, we are indeed not promised a perfect life, but if we are wise enough to adopt the ways of leading our lives in contentment, then surely the light of Allah will prevail while darkness will surely fade from our lives.
May Allah grant us all eternal happiness Ameen!
