The Different Types of Veils in Islam

The ideology behind the veil is to not be attracted or attract someone who you could not lawfully have relationships with.

Here are three of the major reasons why Muslim who wear the veil are;

  1. To please Allah
  2. Preserving beauty
  3. Taking a stand against female exploitation

Wearing the veil comes in different styles and below are the different types of veil.

Al-Amira

This is a type of veil that requires two piece; a cap and a scarf. The cap is placed on the head and then the scarf is place on the head (above the length of the ear).

Chador

This is another type of veil that entails a cape-like grown. Only the face is exposed.

Hijab

The word hijab literally means curtains and it describes an act of covering up. These are head scarves worn by Muslim women and comes in different color and styles. This type of veil covers the head, ears and neck but however, leaves the face exposed.

This is the veil that covers the entire body i.e. the hands, face, body and legs

Shayla

This veil entails a long rectangular scarf that falls from the head and is wrapped the shoulders.

Niqab

This veil covers the entire body except the eyes.  It can be worn with a separated eye veil.

Khimar

This is a cape-like vein that hangs down the lower back. It covers all parts of the body except the face.
