The Duty of Children Toward their Parents

Once children are born, they automatically become the responsibility and duty of their parents. It is expected for the parents to do everything possible to make their children happy and better persons in the future, but by saying this it doesn’t mean that children do not also have duties and responsibility towards their parents.

Great efforts are made by parents to make their children happy and to win their love, therefore children should do the same thing to make them happy in return for the education, expenses, protection, and care they gave them from infancy until adolescence and even later in life.

The duties of children

The duties and responsibilities of children are found naturally. Here are some of the duties every child should do.

#1.Being dutiful to parents and obeying them

As a child, being dutiful to your parents begins with showing them kindness. The Almighty Allah says in the Qur’an:

And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honor. (Al-Isra 17:23)

Children must obey their parents in all matters, especially those that safeguard them from the disobedience to Allah. Children can only disobey their parents in matters that constitute disobedience to Allah.

In Islam, disobedience to parents is described as ingratitude and it is one of the gravest sins.  Every child should obey and show kindness towards their parents as it leads to righteousness.

#2.Love

This is a feeling that every parent want from their children. Showing love towards your parents makes obedience easy. Children must show respect and gratitude towards their parents at all times.

#3.Harshness Against Parents

It is very wrong for children to subject their parents to any harsh conditions. A child is expected to do anything to make them happy so they will be grateful to Allah for having them.

#5.Gently guide them to good

If you see your parents doing anything that is sinful, your duty is to advice them using very gentle ways.
