The Human heart! The heart is the most extraordinary and miraculous gift from Allah in both the physical and the spiritual sense. The heart is not simply the organ of emotions, “feelings” and desires or decisions and opinions but it also encompasses the soul, knowledge, bravery and more. When purified it is the seat of the intellect.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is quoted in a Hadith as saying in reference to the heart:” There is a piece of flesh in our body if it is sound the whole body is sound and if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupted”.
What Are The Categories Of The Heart?
Basically there are three main types of hearts
#1. A Sound Heart
This is the heart that is not corrupted by doubts and desires, it loves and submits to Allah Azawajala and sincerely does everything to please Allah. Allah was referring to such a heart when He said “The day when there will not benefit (anyone) wealth or children, but only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart. (Qur’an chapter 26 verse 88-8).
#2.The Death Heart
This heart has no life and does not know Allah Azawajala .The death heart follows the lower desires and responds not when called to faith or truth.
#3.The Sick Heart
This heart is alive but is diseased. It loves Allah and wants to submit to him but it also follows its own desires. It struggles constantly, confused and pulled in two different directions. Most of us recognize ourselves having a sick heart. One part is pulled towards wanting to know and get closer to Allah Azawajala and the other towards the lower self and sins.
How to Heal The Sick Heart
#1.Strengthen the heart
This is attained through increasing one’s faith and knowledge of Allah, as well as through constant acts of worship. One of the most powerful acts of worship that remedies the sickness of the heart is constant recitation of Qur’an. Allah says,
“O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.” [Quran: Chapter 10, Verse 57]
#2.Remove The Root Cause of The Disease
For the heart to truly recover, one needs to sincerely repent from any sin/ bad deeds that’s holding one back, and also seek sincere forgiveness from Allah to clean off that sin..
The Messenger of Allah is quoted in a Hadith as saying: “When the believer commits sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents and gives up that sin and seeks forgiveness, his heart will be polished. But if (the sin) increases, (the black spot) increases”. That is the ‘Rann’ that Allah mentions in His Book:
“Nay! But on their hearts is the Rann (covering of sins and evil deeds) for which they used to earn. [Quran: Chapter 83, Verse 14].
Let us all strive hard to make our hearts sound and pure for the remembrance of Allah Azawajala.
