The Role of Parents In Islam

As Muslims, we are commanded to obey, honour, and respect our parents in our entire lifetime except when it comes to the disobedience of Allah. Unlike other religions, Islam raised the status of parents especially our mothers. A man came to Prophet Muhammed and asked him who he should obey after obeying Allah and his Messenger; Prophet Muhammed told him your mother, your mother, your mother and then your father. Is it the right of a parent to be loved and respected but with every right comes a responsibility. The role of parents in Islam does not stop at providing basic necessities for their children; it is something more than that because in the day of judgement, Allah the Almighty is going to question you about how you brought up your children. Children have the right to be educated, guided, scolded, fed, loved and provided for.  In this generation we are living in, parents need to get close to their children, they need to be friends with them because if they are not close to them, society will raise their kids. The future of a child depends on the teachings given to them by their parents.  According to the sayings of Prophet Muhammed, “All of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects. The ruler is a guardian of his subjects and the man is a guardian of his family, the lady is a guardian of her husband’s house and his off-spring and all of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects.”

The first teacher a child has is his/her mother; therefore mothers play an exemplary role in the upbringing of the children. That is why Prophet Muhammed told his followers to marry righteous believing women because when the father is out fending for his family, the mother stays home taking care of the children, therefore if a woman is righteous and God fearing, she will be righteous in bringing up her children according to Quran and Sunnah. The most important role a parent can play is when it comes to the child’s religious and moral education.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: “Deen” comes first then “dunya”. The first education a righteous parent gives child is the teachings about the oneness and commands of Allah. You have not done justice to parenthood if you just teach them about gaining worldly things; you have to teach them about the hereafter. The best time to teach your child about Allah and his book is when they are young and tender. Without this religious education, the child will never learn to fear Allah. It is often said that a child who started by learning the book of Allah becomes more intelligent than the rest of the children when it comes to secular education.

MORAL EDUCATION: As Muslims, we have to teach our children about having a good moral conduct and good manners. The respect parents instil in their children will help them become respectable, responsible, kind, friendly, obedient, patient, humble and honourable children. As a good parent you should not let society do the upbringing of your children for you. If you practice the good morals you teach your children at home then they will find it easy to inculcate it in their lifestyle. Don’t just tell them, show them and they will grow up to become righteous children. Thus, the mercy and blessing of Allah shall be upon your entire family.
