Sheikh Abdur-Rahman As-Sa’di (Allah’s blessings be upon him) said that tranquility and inner peace of one’s heart is the goal which every person tries to achieve in life. This eagerness is found in almost every person because tranquility of the heart is the essential prerequisite for a peaceful and happy life. Although each person goes through sad moments in life, here is a list of top means for happiness that may just put that bright smile on your face during rough times.
#1. Faith and righteous deeds are the most important and easiest means for happiness. Allah says, “Whoever does good whether male or female and he is a believer, We will most certainly make him live a happy life, and We will most certainly give them their reward for the best of what they did” [Qur’an 16:97]. Therefore, Allah has promised that those who attain faith (in Him and His messengers) and do righteous deeds will be blessed with good and happy lives in this world as well as the hereafter.
#2. Treating people and Allah’s creatures with kindness and compassion is also a means for getting rid of worries and anxiety. Allah protects both believers and non-believers from worries and cares for what they show of kindness and good manners to people. However, a believer’s reward for such kindness outweighs that of the non-believer.
#3. Occupying one’s self with righteous deeds and useful knowledge is the best way to remove worries resulting from tension and other negative feelings.
#4. Caring only for the present day and doing away with thoughts of past misfortunes and the unknown future is a great remedy for one’s worries and cares. Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, “A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak one, and both are good. Stick to the one that is beneficial for you, keep asking Allah for help and do not refrain from it. If you are afflicted in any way, do not say, ‘If I had taken this or that step, it would have resulted into such and such’, but say only, Allah so determined and did as He willed’. The word ‘if’ opens the gates of satanic thoughts.” [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]
#5. Much remembrance of Allah is also recommended as one of the best means to bring happiness and tranquility to one’s heart. Its effect in removing worries is amazing. “Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured”, Allah says. [Qur’an 13:28]
#6. Always concentrate on the useful things in your life and try your best to accomplish them through self-encouragement and self-promotion. Don’t attempt to approach harmful practices that make you suffer depressing feelings.
#7. To be free from worries, it is recommended to accomplish your tasks on a daily basis and never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Otherwise, your tomorrow will be tiring and exhausting.
#8. Always prioritize your tasks and values. One should give priority to things that really matter and those you’re interested in over things you may dislike and find boring.
#9. When a person is afflicted with any calamity, they should think of how many blessings they already have. Spend some time doing this and you’ll come to realize that Allah’s favours to you are countless and that your hardships are not as great as you thought.
#10. When a person relies on Allah with all his heart and seeks guidance through Him, he will recover from all his psychological and physical diseases. “And whoever relies upon Allah- then He is sufficient for him”, says Allah. [Qur’an 65:3]
