How To Deal With Sleeplessness

We all experience those occasional long horrible nights; the rolling and tossing, begging for sleep to come and take you away. In fact the more you try, the harder it is for you to sleep. Here are some remedies:

1. Check your spirituality

Sometimes we have a lot of problems in our lives because we focus on the less important things and forget about our Creator. As such, we fill our heart with worry and fear, and find no peace. The only true rest for the heart and mind is in the remembrance of Allah. Allah says in Surah13 28 : “Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” The best way to feel at peace therefore, is to constantly engage in good deeds; praying, fasting, being humble and most importantly, placing your trust in Allah.

2. Find the root of your problems

Even if your spirituality is a little alright, worry and stress is  normal. Everyone feels it sometimes. Perhaps you are working too hard. You need rest. Whatever the problem is, try to figure it out. It is easier to find a solution that way. You know what they say, “Knowing the problem is half of the solution”.

3. Seek medical assistance

Like I mentioned earlier, the occasional sleeplessness is normal. But if you constantly have sleepless nights, you should see a psychologist.

4. Make dua

The best way to ward off fear and anxiety is to constantly indulge in making dua. According to a weak narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) advised the following supplication in times of sleeplessness: “O Allah the stars have gone far away and the eyes are rested. You are Alive and Infinite, You do not slumber nor does sleep overtake You. Oh Alive and the Everlasting One, grant me rest tonight and let my eyes sleep (close).”

Allah is no doubt the giver of life and death, and the one who can bring tranquillity to a person’s heart. That is why we constantly seek HIS assistance, knowing that only HE can cure all ills.
