Muslim Inventions-Part 1

This article is inspired by the book “1001 Inventions”. It celebrates the forgotten history of 1000 years of Muslim heritage. Below is a list of inventions by Muslims (which are very useful to us).

#1. Clocks

This amazing invention was created by al-Jazari. He was from Diyarbakir in Southeast Turkey and was known as a pious Muslim as well as a highly skilled engineer who gave birth to the concept of automatic machines. By 1206, al-Jazari had made numerous clocks of all shapes and sizes. These clocks helped them to move along and keep a head with time.

#2. Coffee

It has been said that long ago, hard-working people fought to stay awake until curious goats and their watchful master, an Arab named Khalid discovered this life-changing substance.

#3. Camera

Ibn al-Haitham revolutionized optics by taking the subject from one being discussed philosophically to an actual science based on experiments. He rejected the Greek idea that an invisible light emitting from the eye caused sight, and instead rightly stated that vision was caused by light reflecting off an object and entering the eye.

He used a dark room with a pinhole on one side and a white sheet on the other then provided the evidence for his theory. Light came through the hole and projected an inverted image of the objects outside the room on the sheet opposite. At the time he called it “qamara”. This was the world’s first camera obscura.

#4. Cleanliness

Islam is based on cleanliness ad purity both on the physical and spiritual form. In the 13th century, the same engineer, al-Jazari, wrote a book describing mechanical devices, including “wudhu” machines. It was brought to guest to perform ablution.

#5. Universities

The first University was founded by a Muslim woman. Fatima Al-Fihri believed that knowledge is key so she decided to  give back to the Fez community a learning center.
