Every day, we see beautiful fruit and vegetable plants all around us. At home, meals are prepared and beautifully decorated with scented vegetables and different fruits varieties on the side plate or basket for the after meal snack. But have we ever wondered where all these fruits and vegetables come from or even how they emerge from the soil?
We all know that plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables grow in dark soil. So how do beautifully scented flowers or strawberries, or wonderfully scented yellow lemons and oranges emerge from that dark soil which does not smell so good?
Each plant, each vegetable, each flower and each fruit has different aroma, colors and flavors. Apricots, apples, watermelons, oranges, cherries, strawberries, bananas, grapes and dates each have different taste, aroma and shape. Allah (Subhanahu WA Ta’alla) has created these for us.
Fruits and vegetables have the vitamins and the minerals that are essential for our growth and maintenance. We see different fruits for winter and for summer, each one meeting our needs. From the oranges to tangerines and grapefruits that come out in winter, we get abundant Vitamin C. Vitamin C help protect us against the bitter colds of winter.
Juicy fruits such as watermelons, cherries, cantaloupe and peaches are ripe during the summer when the weather is hot and we lose a lot of water from our bodies. The juicy fruits help replace what we lose from the scorching summer heat.
Isn’t it obvious that this is not accident?
We know that fruits, particularly berries and those with exotic colors are rich in antioxidants, which means that they are huge boosters to our health. Strawberries are no exception to this. All these contain Vitamin C, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, and magnesium.
The health benefits from strawberry include improved eye care, proper brain function, relief from high blood pressure, arthritis, gout and various cardiovascular diseases. Strawberries are good for improving the immune system, prevents against various types of cancers and reduces the signs of premature aging.
Banana is loaded with valuable micro nutrients, especially potassium. Potassium is one of the most important electrolytes in the body, helping to regulate heart function as well as fluid balance; a key factor in regulating blood pressure. The effectiveness of potassium-rich foods such as banana, in lowering blood pressure and protecting against heart diseases and strokes is well documented and bolstered by considerable scientific evidence.
None of these happened by accident. The watermelon didn’t decide by itself, all of a sudden, to emerge during the summer. Neither did the tastes and aroma of all of these fruits just happen. No fruit can decide its scent.
Allah (Subhanahu WA Ta’alla) who made the fruit for His creatures did so to provide nourishment for us so that we will continue to stay strong and healthy.
Allah said in the Qur’an:
“He sends down water from the sky from which We bring forth growth of every kind, and from that We bring forth the green shoots and from them We bring forth close packed seeds, and, from that spathes of the date-palm, date clusters hanging down, and gardens of grapes and olives and pomegranates, both similar and dissimilar. Look at their fruits as they bear fruit and ripen. There are signs in that for people who believe.” (6:99)
From this ayah of the Quran it is clear that like every other thing in this universe, the production of fruits from seeds is also a sign of Allah (Subhanahu WA Ta’alla). It is He who has produced these fruits; therefore, the nourishment we get from them are a blessing from Allah SWT.
