The Sunni Creed by Imām Abu Ja’far Al-Ṭaḥāwī (Part 1)

Sunni Islam is the largest of the two major Islamic sects. It was founded on the conviction that Prophet Muhammad passed away without selecting a leader to replace him. Sunni Muslims believe that chaos which followed led to the appointment of  the Prophet (SAW)’s father-in-law Abu-Bakr as his successor as opposed to the Shi’a Muslims who believe that the Prophet (SAW) had chosen Ali ibn Abi Talib to be his first successor.

The following Sunni creed was written by Imām Abu Ja’far Al-Ṭaḥāwī who was an exceptional pupil of Imām Abū Ḥanīfah.  It was later translated and organized by Abu Amina Elias.

We say about the unity of Allah believing with the help of Allah – that Allah is one, without any partners.

There is nothing like Him.

There is nothing that can overwhelm Him.

There is no god other than Him.

He is the eternal without a beginning and enduring without end.

He will never perish or come to an end.

Nothing happens except what He wills.

No imagination can conceive of Him and no understanding can comprehend Him.

He is different from any created being.

We believe in the Preserved Tablet (lawh al-mahfuz) and the Pen (al-qalam) and in everything written on it.

Even if all created beings were to gather together to make something fail to exist whose existence Allah had written on the Tablet, they would not be able to do so; and if all created beings were to gather together to make something exist which Allah had not written on it, they would not be able to do so. The Pen has dried having written down all that will be in existence until the Day of Judgment.

Whatever a person has missed he would have never received, and whatever he received he would have never missed.
