The Top Five Arab Universities 2018

Based on the latest QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings by subject, here are the top 5 universities in the Arab region.

#1.American University of Beirut (AUB)

The American University of Beirut (AUB) overtook the King Fahd University this year as the highest-ranked university in the Arab region. It is ranked 235th in the latest QS World University Rankings, one of the most widely read tertiary institutional rankings worldwide.

The AUB currently has around 8,800 students enrolled; it is a private, secular university which teaches all courses in English. The university offers generous financial aid, with more than 75% of aid applicants getting financial help. It has over 130 undergraduate/graduate programs in seven faculties.

The university’s Archaeology and Philosophy departments are ranked among the top 200 QS World University Rankings by Subjects.

#2.King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM)

Dropping down by only one spot is Saudi Arabia’s highest-ranked institution of higher learning, the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). The university received top scores for employer reputation, faculty to student ratio and citations per faculty. The university was established in 1963 in Dhahran, a major administrative center for the Saudi oil industry.

KFUPM is one of the most selective universities in Saudi Arabia, its science and engineering programs are highly considered. The university’s technology and engineering departments are ranked in the global top 200 QS World University Rankings for the depth in scope for both subject areas.

#3.King Saud University (KSU)

The King Saud University (KSU) is ranked first for its web impact in the whole Arab region, indicating it has a solid commitment to international engagement and communication. For academic reputation, faculty/student ratio and citations per faculty, the university also achieves top scores.

KSU was founded in 1957, it is located in the capital city of Riyadh and it accepts both male and female students, unlike the KFUPM which is a male only institution.

#4.King Abdulaziz University (KAU)

KAU was established in Jeddah in 1967 and named after the founder of Saudi Arabia. It is also ranked joint 267th in the World University Ranking. The university has separate campuses for male and female students and it enrolls around 82,000 students. In the latest QS World University Rankings by subjects, KAU received its highest score for its Chemical Engineering and Mathematics departments.

#5.United Arab Emirates University

The university rose one point this year to occupy the 390th position on the QS World University Rankings.  The United Arab Emirates University is the oldest university in the UAE.

Established in 1976 by the emirates founder Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the university has around 13,800 students. Over 80% of the students are female. It has the largest number of electronic resource in the Arab region, with more than 170,000 e-books.
